AFTER DARK is a site-responsive sound installation built from field recordings gathered during repeated nighttime walks through a city. Fifteen small cassette players function as individual localized sound sources, allowing fragments of the city to emerge independently as visitors move through the installation rather than forming a single continuous soundscape. For Tokyo, George will create a new body of recordings through nighttime walks across the city before reconfiguring the installation specifically for Room_412. The gallery’s two adjoining rooms will become part of this version of the work, with sound dividing, overlapping, and bleeding subtly across the threshold as visitors move between the spaces. Presented in a controlled low-light environment, the cassette players and illuminated architectural elements form a quiet constellation around the listener—part archive, part map, and part city after midnight.
